Africa World Airlines (AWA) has restored its Accra-Abidjan flight, several years after suspending the route during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline says the renewed connection will strengthen economic and business ties between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire by improving mobility for investors, businesses and travellers across the two markets.
Speaking at the relaunch ceremony at the Abidjan Airport, Founder and Co-Chairman of AWA, Togbe Afede XIV, said reconnecting the two countries is a priority given their strong economic and historical ties.
He said the airline is returning to the route with a long-term commitment to supporting trade and closer relations between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
“We are back to stay to support Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire friendship, Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire business relationship.”
Togbe Afede XIV also disclosed that AWA is embarking on a major expansion drive, including plans to acquire several larger Embraer E190 aircraft to increase passenger capacity.
The airline currently operates the 50-seater Embraer 145, but the planned fleet expansion is expected to support the carrier’s efforts to connect more African markets and facilitate intra-African trade.
“Through that we expect to link African countries and expand trade among African countries so we can achieve prosperity together.”
Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting and promoting domestic and regional air services.
She said improved air connectivity is essential to expanding access to markets and deepening economic integration across Africa.
According to her, Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a regional aviation hub requires stronger collaboration between government, airlines and other industry stakeholders.
“As Ghana continues to position itself as a regional aviation hub, we will work closely with our partners, airlines and other stakeholders to promote policies that encourage increased connectivity, competition, investment and affordable air transport services across Africa.”
The restoration of the Accra-Abidjan route is therefore expected to provide another air travel option between the two neighbouring economies while supporting the movement of people, capital and business opportunities within the region.
