We want to make Ghana the hub for production and exporting to the rest of Africa – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has spoken about the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) duing a meeting held at the Blue House with the President of Korea, Lee Jae-Myung.

During the discussion on Wednesday, March 11, President Mahama highlighted that the headquarters of the AfCFTA is based in Accra, Ghana. He also indicated that the government intends to make Ghana the production hub.

“Africa has passed the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is a historic agreement that opens a market of 1.4 billion people, and the secretariat of the AfCFTA is based in Accra, Ghana and so we want to create Ghana as the hub for production and export to the rest of Africa,” he said.

President Mahama began his five-day working visit to the Republic of Korea on Wednesday.

The President touched down at the Air Force Base in Seoul, South Korea, at exactly 8:00 p.m. Korea Time yesterday.

He was received by the Korean Ambassador to Ghana, Park Kyongsig; the Director-General, Africa and Middle East Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Korea, Chung Kwangyong, and Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi, together with other officials from the Ghana Embassy in Seoul.

The visit is aimed at deepening the long-standing bilateral relations between Ghana and the Republic of Korea, including exploring new opportunities for trade, investment and technological cooperation.

After the meeting with the President of Korea, President Mahama indicated that Ghana remains proud of the historic relations with Korea, with the shared values, respect for democracy and for human rights.

The President also underscored expanding cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, particularly through initiatives supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, aimed at boosting rice production and enhancing Ghana’s food security.

He further highlighted opportunities for stronger economic partnership through the African Continental Free Trade Area, whose Secretariat is hosted in Accra, positioning Ghana as a strategic hub for production and exports to the wider African market.

President Mahama expressed optimism that Ghana’s natural and human resources, combined with Korea’s technological innovation, will continue to drive a mutually beneficial partnership for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
