SGCC & EUROCHAM Convene Stakeholders on Ghana’s New Import Rules and VAT Reforms

On 19th March, the SGCC, in collaboration with EUROCHAM, hosted a breakfast meeting at The Enclave in East Legon, bringing together importers and key stakeholders within Ghana’s trade ecosystem for a highly informative and engaging session.

Held under the theme “Navigating Ghana’s Import Regulations: What Every Business Should Know,” the event was designed to provide participants with practical, actionable insights into Ghana’s importation processes. Particular emphasis was placed on compliance under the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) and the implications of the newly implemented VAT reforms on business operations.

The meeting attracted a diverse audience, including importers and business professionals seeking to enhance their understanding of the evolving regulatory and tax environment.

A major highlight of the session was the participation of distinguished speakers representing critical institutions within the import value chain.

Mr Dominic Nartey, Chief Revenue Officer with the Domestic Tax Revenue Division (DTRD) Free Zone Unit of the GRA, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the new VAT reforms. He outlined their implications for businesses, compliance requirements, and key considerations for importers, providing practical guidance on how businesses can adapt to the evolving tax framework.

Madam Winifred Odoi, Chief Revenue Officer with the Customs Division of the GRA, delivered an insightful presentation on customs compliance. She highlighted common challenges encountered by importers and offered practical guidance on how to mitigate delays, avoid penalties, and better align with Customs procedures.

Mr Raymond R. Amaglo, Director of Operations at Ghana Link Network Services Ltd, presented an in-depth overview of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), detailing its operational framework and demonstrating how importers can leverage the platform to improve efficiency in the clearance process.

Mr Salifu Abubakari, Managing Director at Activa Insurance, provided valuable insights into risk management in international trade. His presentation underscored the importance of cargo insurance and highlighted practical measures importers can adopt to safeguard their consignments against unforeseen risks, especially within a dynamic regulatory environment.

In addition, the meeting featured focused discussions on the new VAT reforms being implemented in Ghana, with particular attention to their impact on business operations. Key issues addressed included cost implications, compliance obligations, and the importance of accurate documentation and proactive planning.

The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment, which afforded participants the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers and obtain clarification on pertinent issues affecting their operations.

Overall, the breakfast meeting served as an effective platform for knowledge sharing and stakeholder engagement, equipping participants with practical tools to strengthen compliance, adapt to VAT reforms, enhance operational efficiency, and manage risk more effectively within their import activities.
